Lesson 1: ‘Ukulele Foundation

In This Lesson:

  • Virtual Excursion: Kamaka ‘Ukulele

  • Virtual Excursion: Humane Society of Honolulu

  • In Studio: Holding the ‘ukulele, basic picking, and basic strumming

  • In Studio: Rhythmic Notation & Beats

  • In Studio: Introduce the Music Staff and where our open strings are placed on the Staff

  • In Studio: Basic Picking (single note) & Strumming (chord)

At the end of this lesson, students should

  • Know about the different parts of their ‘ukulele

  • Understand how their instrument is tuned

  • Be able to hold, pick, and strum their instrument

  • Understand what is a musical Staff, and be aware that the Staff has lots of information, including the Treble Clef symbol, Time Signature, measure lines, and notes.

  • Understand what single notes are versus chords

  • Be more aware of rhythmic notation and the different types of notes (quarter, half, etc).

  • Be able to clap/tap and pick quarter notes in a semblance of time
